Catholic Encyclopedia - Pope St. Marcellus I, after a vacancy in office following the death of Pope St. Marcellinus, was elected to the papacy in 308. St. Marcellus organized the diocese of Rome by titular churches. Some of the lapsed from the Diocletian persecution thought that they should be readmitted at once, but St. Marcellus insisted on the prescribed public penance. He was driven into exile, where he died in 309.
