Avondale Zion United Church - Tillsonburg, Ontario

Avondale Zion United Church History - Avondale Zion United Church had its beginnings in the hamlet of Dereham Forge in 1847. Some congregational members with Presbyterian origins held worship services in an old school house. In 1849, Harvey Tillson, brother of the town's founder Edwin Tillson, donated land for the first Presbyterian church. On Sept. 5, 1849, construction began to erect a church building at a cost of $1,100. . . . The bell placed in the belfry tower of the church in 1855 served as both a fire alarm and an accurate timesetting device for businesses and factories in the town as well as farmers in the surrounding area. . . . In 1866, a complete account of the opening and dedication of Avondale Presbyterian Church and the laying of the cornerstone which is still intact appeared in the Tillsonburg Observer. . . . Avondale United Church was designated as a Heritage Building on June 19, 1981. In the proclamation, the church was described as Tillsonburg's oldest religious structure.
